Loveandkin TeamQuick answer: American mahjong is a four-player tile game played with 152 tiles, including 8 jokers and 8 flowers, and a new card of winning hands published every spring. To start, you need a set with racks, this year's card, and a few friends who are learning too. Most beginners pick up the basics in one or two lessons: the Charleston, building toward one hand on the card, and calling discards.
American mahjong has had a big revival, and plenty of new players sit down at the table for the first time this year. It looks complicated from the outside because of the tiles and the card, but the flow of a game is simple once you have played a few rounds. This guide covers what you need, how a game goes, and the habits that help new players most.
The card. Every hand you can win with is printed on a card that changes each year. You do not invent hands, you pick one from the card and build toward it.
Jokers. The set has 8 jokers that can stand in for tiles in groups of three or more, which makes hands easier to finish.
The Charleston. Before play starts, everyone passes unwanted tiles to the other players in a set order.
Racks. Each player keeps tiles on a rack, and the racks hold the exposed groups you call from discards.
A set of 152 tiles with four racks, usually with pushers that help move tiles forward.
This year's card. Each player needs one. The new card comes out in the spring, so check that the whole table uses the same year.
Dice to decide who deals and where to break the wall.
Optional, but helpful: a line reader to keep your place on the card, and a table cover or mat.
A full tile set is an investment, and it is heavy to carry to a friend's house. A card set plays the same game with 160 playing cards instead of tiles, two dice and an instruction guide in a magnetic box. It is an easy way to practice before buying tiles, or to play while traveling.

Build the wall. Tiles are shuffled face down and built into walls in front of each rack.
Deal. East, the dealer, takes 14 tiles and everyone else takes 13.
The Charleston. Pass three tiles right, across and left. Unless a player stops it, a second Charleston goes left, across and right. Then the players across from each other may make a courtesy pass of up to three tiles.
Pick a hand. Compare your tiles with the card and choose one or two hands that are closest.
Play. In turn, each player picks a tile from the wall and discards one. You may call a discard to complete a group of three or more and expose it on your rack.
Mah Jongg. The first player to complete a hand from the card exactly, with all 14 tiles, wins the round.
Jokers never go in a single or a pair. They only fill groups of three or more.
You cannot call a discard for a pair unless that tile finishes your hand for Mah Jongg.
Dragons match suits. Red goes with craks, green with bams, and white, called soap, with dots.
Exposed groups tell everyone your plan. Before calling a tile, think about whether it gives away your hand too early.
The most common beginner problem is losing track of the hand you chose. A line reader sits under one line of the card like a ruler, and ours also prints the Charleston order and the joker rule as reminders. Read more in our guide to the mahjong line reader.

Learn with a group. A table of four beginners learns faster and laughs more than one new player with three experts.
Start with open hands. Play a few practice rounds with tiles face up so everyone can talk through choices.
Stay flexible. Keep two possible hands in mind after the Charleston and drop one when your tiles decide for you.
Play weekly. Regular games make the card familiar much faster than reading the rules.
Learning mahjong is a milestone many players like to remember, especially if a whole group learned together. These ornaments carry the player's name and the line “The Year I Learned Mahjong,” so they go on the tree every Christmas after.

Most people can play a slow game after one or two lessons. Feeling comfortable with the card usually takes a few weeks of regular play.
Yes, if you play with others. The hands change every spring, and everyone at the table should use the same year's card.
152: three suits of bams, craks and dots, plus winds, dragons, 8 flowers and 8 jokers.
Yes. A card set follows the same rules and is lighter and cheaper, which makes it a good way to practice before buying a tile set.
